Top 10 Everyday Ways to Reduce Carbon

1) Drive smarter (or drive less when you can)

  • Combine errands into one trip

  • Carpool when possible

  • Avoid aggressive acceleration and speeding

  • Keep tires properly inflated

2) Choose cleaner transportation options

If it works for your lifestyle, consider:

  • Walking or biking for short trips

  • Public transportation

  • Switching to a hybrid or electric vehicle when you’re ready

Even shifting some trips away from fuel-powered driving makes a difference.

3) Reduce food waste

Food waste creates emissions from production, shipping, and disposal.

  • Plan meals before shopping

  • Store food properly

  • Freeze leftovers

  • Use “eat first” bins in your fridge

4) Eat more plant-forward meals

You don’t have to go fully vegetarian. Try:

  • One or two meatless days per week

  • Smaller portions of meat

  • More legumes, vegetables, and grains

5) Use energy wisely at home

  • Turn off lights when not needed

  • Use LED bulbs

  • Unplug unused chargers

  • Set your AC a bit higher in summer and lower in winter

  • Run full loads in the dishwasher and laundry

6) Wash clothes in cold water (and air-dry when possible)

Cold-water washing saves energy. Air-drying reduces dryer use and helps clothes last longer.

7) Buy less, buy better

Before purchasing, ask:

  • Do I really need this?

  • Can I borrow it, repair it, or buy it used?
Buying fewer new items reduces manufacturing and shipping emissions.

8) Keep electronics longer

Phones, laptops, and tablets have a big footprint during manufacturing. Extend their life by:

  • Replacing batteries

  • Repairing screens

  • Avoiding frequent upgrades

9) Recycle correctly and recycle textiles too

Recycling reduces landfill waste, but “wish-cycling” can contaminate loads. Follow local rules.
For clothing: reuse, repair, or recycle textiles through proper collection programs so less ends up in landfills.

10) Talk about it and invite others in

Climate action grows through community. Share a tip with a friend, bring a program to your workplace, or support local initiatives. One household is helpful, many households becomes real change.
